About Ithaca Urban Timber Salvage
Our chief aim is to greatly reduce the amount of valuable timber that enters the waste stream by harvesting and milling it to produce useful, high-quality lumber. We give trees a second life.
Recent EPA figures indicate that wood makes up 5.3% of municipal solid waste found in landfills across the nation; and a good portion of that is unfortunately made up of felled trees and mismanaged, perfectly salvageable wood.
Ithaca has long been called the “Forest City“, known for its abundance and diversity of species. In an urban forest setting like Ithaca and its surrounding communities, trees must be responsibly cared for and taken down when they present a hazard or have reached an age when harvesting becomes necessary. And this is where the greatest opportunity lies: fresh, local lumber, custom-milled right on site.
With a looming energy crisis and lumber transportation costs rising steadily, buying local lumber is not only cost-effective, but an ecologically sound choice, significantly curbing the reach of industrial deforestation and a key step in reducing unnecessary landfill waste. We are fortunate to live in a region where high-quality wood from trees can be readily obtained. So harvest wood locally, it’s everywhere you look!
